What Is the Lymphatic System and How Does It Influence Health?
The lymphatic system is one of the body's most important yet often overlooked physiological systems. Often referred to as the body's "second circulatory system", it is a vast network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, organs, and tissues that help maintain fluid balance, support immune function, transport fats, and clear waste products from tissues throughout the body (Jakus, Hong and Kume, 2025; Ji, 2024). Unlike the cardiovascular system, which relies on the heart as a central pump, the lymphatic system depends largely on movement, muscle contractions, breathing, and changes in pressure within the body to keep lymph flowing. The Three Essential Functions of the Lymphatic System
Fluid Balance
Every day, several litres of fluid move from the bloodstream into surrounding tissues. The lymphatic system collects excess fluid, proteins, and cellular debris and returns them to circulation. Immune Surveillance
The lymphatic system is a central component of the immune system. Lymph nodes filter lymphatic fluid and act as monitoring stations where immune cells can identify and respond to bacteria, viruses, toxins, and abnormal cells. Waste Clearance

The Lymphatic System and Healthy Ageing
In recent years, researchers have increasingly recognised the lymphatic system as an important contributor to healthy ageing and longevity. Emerging evidence suggests that age-related decline in lymphatic function may contribute to many of the processes associated with ageing, including chronic inflammation, reduced immune resilience, cardiovascular dysfunction, metabolic disturbances, and cognitive decline (Ji, 2024; Rojas Velazquez et al., 2026). As we age, lymphatic vessels undergo structural and functional changes. These include reduced vessel elasticity, impaired pumping ability, changes in lymphatic endothelial cells, and reduced transport efficiency. The Lymphatic System, Brain Health and Longevity
One of the most exciting developments in modern medicine has been the growing understanding of the relationship between lymphatic function and brain health.
Research has shown that specialised lymphatic vessels surrounding the brain play an important role in clearing metabolic waste products from the central nervous system. Age-related decline in these drainage pathways may impair the removal of proteins such as amyloid-beta and tau, which are associated with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases (Rojas Velazquez et al., 2026). The Lymphatic System and Immune Resilience
The immune system and lymphatic system are intimately connected. The Lymphatic System and Cancer Research
The relationship between the lymphatic system and cancer is an area of significant scientific interest. The lymphatic network plays an important role in immune surveillance, helping immune cells move throughout the body to identify and respond to abnormal or damaged cells (Jakus, Hong and Kume, 2025). Researchers have also identified links between lymphatic dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and changes in the tissue environment that may influence disease processes, including cancer development and progression (Ji, 2024). Age-related decline in lymphatic function has been associated with increased systemic inflammation and impaired immune responses, both of which are recognised as important factors in overall health and healthy ageing (Ji, 2024; Rojas Velazquez et al., 2026). At the same time, the lymphatic system plays a complex role in cancer biology because lymphatic vessels can provide pathways through which cancer cells may spread to lymph nodes and other tissues. Supporting Lymphatic Health
Because the lymphatic system lacks a central pump, daily habits can significantly influence lymphatic circulation.
Research supports the role of regular movement, exercise, deep diaphragmatic breathing, adequate hydration, restorative sleep, maintaining a healthy body composition, and appropriate lymphatic therapies in supporting healthy lymphatic function and circulation (Ji, 2024; Filelfi et al., 2021). A Terrain Perspective
From a terrain perspective, the lymphatic system is one of the body's primary regulators of internal balance. It influences fluid movement, immune surveillance, waste clearance, inflammation regulation, and communication between tissues.
Current scientific research increasingly supports the idea that healthy lymphatic function is not simply important for managing swelling or supporting immunity.
